How to Keep Your Pet’s Mouth Healthy
Did you know that more than 50% of all dogs and cats have some form of gum disease by the time they’re just 3 years of age? In its most advanced stage, gum disease can cause many problems for a pet, including heart, liver, and kidney disease as a result of oral bacteria entering the bloodstream. The good news is: gum disease can be prevented with ongoing professional dental care, which is available at our hospital.
We take a proactive approach to oral health because we want your four-legged friend to live a happy, healthy life, just as much as you do. That’s why we recommend annual dental exams and cleanings, as needed. We offer diagnostic, preventive, and treatment dental services to accommodate virtually any basic dental need. So if you’re looking for a place that offers high-quality pet dental care, look no further than Animal Kingdom Veterinary Care Center in North Liberty.
About Our Dental Care Services
Our advanced pet dental services are designed to both treat and prevent gum disease, but it’s less expensive and complicated to treat than it is to prevent. Our services include:
- Ultrasonic scaling and polishing
- Gingival treatments
- Surgical extractions (if necessary)
- Dental X-rays
We perform all dental procedures under anesthesia for your pet’s safety. In most cases, we will recommend or require pre-anesthetic blood work so we can be sure there aren’t any underlying health issues that need to be treated first. To keep your pet comfortable, we dispense antibiotics and pain medications as needed.
At-Home Dental Care
To maintain your pet’s dental health throughout their life, we recommend that you establish an at-home routine as early as possible. This routine should include teeth brushing daily, or at least a few times a week. This can help prevent plaque buildup, maintain gum health, and prevent bad breath, among other oral problems. Make sure to use a toothpaste that’s designed specifically for pets. We’ll be happy to give you additional at-home dental care tips, including food or water additives, oral treatments, and dental chews at your pet’s next visit.
