Spay & Neuter
We all love puppies and kittens, but as cute as they are most people don’t want to have whole litters of them in their homes. Therefore, each year, millions of young dogs and cats end up in shelters, and many of them will not get the good home they deserve. This is why it is critical for pet owners to spay and neuter their pets! This routine soft tissue surgery eliminates the risk of unwanted pet pregnancies and helps combat the problem of pet overpopulation. Furthermore, by reducing the number of puppies and kittens taken to shelters each year, strays and rescue animals are more likely to find forever homes. Plus, spaying or neutering your pet is also beneficial to them, ensuring your four-legged friend will live a healthier life.
Benefits of Spaying and Neutering
Spaying and neutering are proven to extend the lives of household pets, compared to their counterparts who don’t receive surgery. Not only do these procedures eliminate the risk of pregnancy, but they also provide a number of health and behavioral benefits including:
- Elimination of heat cycles and spotting for females
- Reduced aggressive male behavior, including spraying and mounting
- Risks of uterine cancer and infections are eliminated in females
- Reduced risk of mammary tumors in females
- Testicular cancer cannot develop in males
- Reduced risk of prostate problems in males
- Males and females are less likely to get lost or injured, as roaming instincts are reduced
When to Spay or Neuter
The exact timing of spay or neuter surgery can vary slightly from pet to pet, however, it is generally recommended at about six months of age, after they have received all their puppy/kitten vaccines. Talk to our doctors about your pet’s ideal surgery time when you bring them for their first visit.
As with all our surgeries, we take great measures to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort. We perform a full examination and blood testing before administering anesthesia. If it’s found that a patient has another medical condition or cannot undergo anesthesia, the surgery will be delayed. Once under anesthesia, your pet’s vital signs are monitored constantly throughout the operation and recovery period.
